Conference Background

Emergency healthcare systems are the frontline of any healthcare system, serving as a critical lifeline for millions. Globally, the burden of injuries and noncommunicable diseases has underscored the urgent need for robust and efficient emergency care. However, despite its critical role, emergency healthcare often remains a neglected sector, particularly in low- and middle-income countries like Kenya.

Kenya, with its growing population and expanding economy, faces significant challenges in providing adequate emergency care services. The country’s Vision 2030, while ambitious in its goals, acknowledges the gaps in emergency medical services (EMS) and trauma care. According to the Emergency Medicine Kenya Foundation, 57 people die in Kenya every hour, and a functioning emergency healthcare system could potentially cut that number in half. Up to 80% of emergency patients in Kenya may die before reaching a hospital, which is double the rate of countries in the global North. The Kenya Emergency Medical Care Strategy 2020 – 2025 was developed to gear towards establishing a working Emergency Medical Care (EMC) System in Kenya as envisaged in the Kenya Policy on Emergency Medical Care 2020-2030. However, significant gaps persist in the implementation and delivery of EMS as of 2024.

To address these pressing challenges, the Stable Health Foundation (SHF) in collaboration with the American Heart Association, Nairobi County, Quality Care Kenya, CareCall, and other partners, is organizing its 3rd Annual Health Innovation and Entrepreneurship Conference, which has a strong focus on future-proofing emergency healthcare in Kenya. The conference aims to convene medics, policymakers, leaders, innovators, researchers, and changemakers to explore and implement sustainable solutions for improving emergency healthcare delivery in Kenya.

This year’s theme is “Future-Proofing Emergency Healthcare Through Innovation and Sustainable Entrepreneurship,” divided into the following subthemes:

  1. Digital health and innovation ecosystems for emergency healthcare
  2. Financing emergency care: innovative models and partnerships
  3. Data analytics, artificial intelligence, and predictive modeling in emergency management
  4. Business model innovation and social entrepreneurship in emergency response
